Rising from rags to riches, Gabrielle Coco Channel was, and still remains, an icon in fashion history. Not only did she start the luxury brand 'Chanel', she popularised women's pants, taking a large step forward in more rights and freedom for women. Along with pants, in 1925 , she created The Chanel Suit: the first business suit for women - with a blazer and a skirt - showing that women could be sophisticated yet authoritative.Chanel wished to find a way to free women from their restricting corsets and long skirts, into professional yet comfortable clothes. Inspired by sportswear, her suits were made from tweed, an under-utilised, diverse fabric. The suit, famously called 'Chanel's uniform', took women's fashion forward and continues to remain iconic to this day and age.
