Allison Janae Hamilton demonstrates unequivocally that when it comes to natural disasters, people of colour are always on the front lines by relying on the historical histories infused in our landscapes. The New York artist spent her childhood summers on her maternal family's Tennessee farm, which inspires and informs her work's strong connection to nature. Hamilton's darkly whimsical compositions are energised by spooky taxidermy and the artist's tremendous sense of place, evoking traditional studio portraits of African-Americans.
